The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza’s Museum Store + Café Receives Retailer Excellence Award

On August 14th, the Gifts & Decorative Accessories Magazine’s 60th annual Retailer Excellence Awards held in New York City honored  The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza’s Museum Store + Café with its top award a Gift Store Design/Redesign.  Receiving the award on behalf of the Museum was Amy Gilchrist, Retail Manager, and Executive Director Nicola Longford.

The Museum Store + Café project was an adaptive reuse project in the historic Daltex building, a 1901 building located at 501 Elm Street.

Located on perhaps the most visited street corner in the City of Dallas, overlooking Dealey Plaza – the founding place of the City of Dallas and the site of the Kennedy Assassination -the Museum Store + Café welcomes visitors from all over the world.

In addition to the traditional books and documentaries sold in the original museum bookstore, this immersive retail environment offers gifts inspired by pop culture of the 60’s, and books, dvds, jewelry, and children’s items inspired by President Kennedy’s legacies such as the Peace Corps, Civil Rights, space exploration, and more. The 34-seat Café area features a video exhibit offering highlights of the Museum’s extensive historic photography and film collections, linking the space to its surroundings and its story.  The Museum Store + Cafe features a unique menu for breakfast, lunch or afternoon snack, full coffee bar and free wi-fi.

Local businesses, artists and purveyors were included in all aspects of the store design and are represented in food and gift merchandise, including architects Corgan Associates, JRT Construction, retail consultant Mary Bloom, local sculptor Brad Oldham and mosaic artist Connie Chantilis.
